It is bittersweet that our strategic social media class has come to an end. Throughout the term we have been given a lot of information regarding ethics, advocacy, measurement, planning and more. With this newly acquired knowledge it is now up to us to decide how to use it outside of class. Here are a few things to recap the term.
Things to Think About
- Brands need to figure out what kind of content they want to share
- What kind of story do we want to tell?
- Which element of those stories is relevant on each channel
- Brands that get in trouble don’t have strategic focus
- Content is king and where your brand has the ability to tell its own story
Create multiple touch points across the brands social media platforms to reach and engage its audience. Determine how the organization can deliver one message across the different social media platforms, but frame the content differently to fit into each platform’s characteristics. It takes a lot of little interactions to make a difference, people need to hear information from a brand 5 times before they can trust it.
After our last class Kelli asked every student to tweet which online sites they used to keep up to date on social media and digital trends. The following are the main social media sites that the class tweeted: Mashable and @mashsocialmedia, webinknow.com, http://www.smartbrief.com/news/socialmedia …, Fast Company, Ted Talks, AdWeek, Cool Hunting, AdAge, Social Media 2 Day, smxplorer, Tech Crunch, Google news, PR Week US, PR Daily News, Twitter, Lynda, and @flud.
We also talked about the future of social media for 2013. Edelman’s 10 social media essentials for 2013 can help guide us through the year.
If you want to work in the social media sector, you must be constantly curious. Search for new information through sites such as mashable and the individual industry sites. Figure out if there are any conferences or events where you can get good input and work with people in your industry to get inspired for fresh strategy ideas. Lastly, places where you connect with people are important. Remember to take it offline and keep it personal by meeting with people in person.
