Craig Pintens started off class on Monday with insight into the power of social media and the ways Oregon’s Athletic Department uses it to build their brand. Pintens cited instances Oregon has monitored and curtailed stories like Chip’s hot tub and an Oregon helmet on Ebay. Their quick action and response via social media prevented the “erroneous” reports from turning into a PR disaster. Pintens and the rest of the athletic department’s emphasis on social media has paid off:
Oregon is only one of two schools in the top 12 rankings for YouTube, Facebook & Twitter. #goducks #J412ssm

Former Oregon football player Carson York was up next and spoke to the class about networking on Twitter and utilizing all 140 characters.

If the stories from @carsonyork‘ lecture is showing us one thing, it’s the power of social networking. #J412ssm

If a Rose Bowl winner wasn’t enough, 15-time All-American and five-time NCAA champion Lauren Fleshman and her husband, triathlete Jesse Thomas were up next. The founders of Picky Bar spoke about how they used their own personal brands to build the brand of the startup energy bar company.
@laurenfleshman wanted to use her website to educate and engage instead of just a “what I’ve done” display. #smartbranding #J412ssm

Overall the entire lecture was jam packed with great information and probably one of my favorites of the year. The four expert speakers covered a wide range of topics but still managed to build off each other and intertwine concepts.
